1998 - BSc Neuroscience, University of Glasgow

    Academic Background

Dr James’ PhD thesis and initial post-doctoral work was on the characterization of a susceptibility gene for psychiatric illness. Subsequent post-doctoral research focused on mitochondrial function following acute brain injury in a transgenic mouse model of a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Most recently, she has been investigating mitochondrial function in the motor neuron disease, spinal muscular atrophy. Dr James understands brain biology and has a particular interest in psychiatric illness, neurodegenerative disease, genetics, and cellular biology. She has multi-disciplinary laboratory expertise in a number of techniques, covering protein biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, histology, and microscopy. Dr James has experience of human tissue studies, as well as transgenic animal models and cell culture systems.

    Publishing History

From her research Dr James has co-authored several peer-reviewed papers, including a paper in Science that was cited as one of the top ten breakthroughs of 2005. She has published first author papers from all of her post-doctoral work.
