On 6 March 2017, Edanz Group held a peer review workshop for researchers in various disciplines at Kobe University, Japan, at the request of a regional researcher network known as K-Connex.

The interactive workshop was led by Dr Trevor Lane, Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant at Edanz, who has experience in managing peer-reviewed journals for academic and research institutions.

The aim of the half-day event was to help ten early- to mid-career researchers develop their career skills by introducing them to international peer review practices. Knowing how to apply expertise to being a journal peer reviewer, while using professional English and diplomacy, is a skill that will help build research careers and is also in high demand by journals worldwide.

Through slide presentations, critical reading exercises, and writing practice, Dr Lane raised audience awareness of what ethical and logical issues to look for in a research article, as well as peer review ethics, and etiquette when writing a peer review report. Differences in journal peer review models, reporting systems and platforms, and processes were also covered. In addition, participants were warned about email spam inviting them to review for so-called predatory journals and conferences.

All workshop participants said the training was useful or very useful. They were particularly appreciative of the individual feedback they received from the instructor as they were crafting peer review reports to suggest improvements in a sample research paper.
