Effective communication of research to the public, using appropriate tone and style of English, is becoming more and more important and needs university investment. That was the main message from Edanz Group at a seminar given at the first annual conference of the Research Manager and Administrator Network - Japan (RMANJ), held in Shinshu University, Nagano, on 1 September 2015.

Speaking to an audience of 50 university research administrators and research office managers, Dr Trevor Lane (Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant of Edanz Group) said that universities and funders worldwide are now adding community impact of research as a key performance indicator. Having spent a decade at The University of Hong Kong helping researchers to publish and publicize their findings, he explained how knowledge exchange had been added as a third mission, to the two traditional missions of education and research. There, and at many universities elsewhere, researchers are required to communicate their findings to multiple audiences so as to increase the societal impact of and engagement with their research.

Staff and students now need to learn how to present their work, in writing and in speaking, to non-academic as well as academic audiences, Dr Lane added. University research offices and external relations offices need to regularly issue well-crafted and relevant news stories for institutional websites, mass media, and social media. To maximize international reach, the language of this outreach activity is English.

In countries where English is a second or foreign language, universities may employ dedicated science or research communicators as knowledge brokers and media trainers. They can also seek professional services in English news writing, press release creation, and presentation/media training provided by trusted companies and individuals.

Through consistent high-quality news/press releases, community engagement, and online presence, universities can raise their regional and international reputation as innovative, relevant, impactful, and accountable research institutions.
