Edanz Group held a medical writing and publishing workshop tour for research students and early-career researchers in Bangkok, Thailand, from 26 to 30 September 2016.

The tour visited three medical research establishments in Bangkok: Ramathibodi Hospital, Faculty of Tropical Medicine at Mahidol University, and Chulabhorn Hospital. Dr Trevor Lane, Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant at Edanz and former managing editor of several medical journals, led the educational tour.

The writing and publishing workshops provided insights into what journal editors and peer reviewers of medical journals look for in manuscript submissions and how journals select papers for publication. Through slide presentations, class activities, and class and individual feedback, the medical research students and clinical researchers learned how to find appropriate target journals, outline and draft a manuscript, submit their work, and navigate the peer review process. They also gained practice in communicating effectively with a target journal and target readership.

The audiences asked many questions throughout each day, including about avoiding plagiarism and self-plagiarism, avoiding salami publishing, presubmission enquiries, appeals, good study design, and patient ethics.

During the class discussions, Dr Lane encouraged the researchers to make use of free online tools available on the Edanz website--namely, the Journal Selector, the elearning platform Author Academy, and a beta version of the guided writing platform Author Path.
