On 23 December 2016, Edanz Group visited Chiba, Japan, to give a seminar to a group of hospital cancer researchers on how to publish research in peer-reviewed journals in English.

The 50 early-career health care professionals in oncology were part of a special cancer study group and hosted the event at the National Cancer Center Hospital East in Kashiwa, Chiba. Dr Trevor Lane (Edanz Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant), who had previously worked in clinical oncology as well as for medical journals, offered advice on how to write up research findings and submit them for publication in indexed international journals.

Featuring discipline-specific examples, this beginner-level seminar titled Effectively Promoting Your Research covered a wide variety of topics and skills in publishing and publicizing research findings. These included deciding on the main findings, conclusions, and implications; selecting an appropriate journal and adhering to its ethical and publishing guidelines; the importance of an attractive but accurate title and abstract; and communicating professionally with the journal at submission and peer review stages. After publication, researchers also need to promote their research to other researchers as well as to the wider community.

Participants asked about how to overcome language barriers in publishing their research papers. They were encouraged to use English throughout the drafting and publishing process as a form of continuing education and career development, and to seek and transparently acknowledge professional help. They were also referred to the free Edanz elearning course Author Academy.
