Laura is a communications specialist with extensive time living and studying abroad, particularly in Japan. Born in Latvia, Laura possesses a high level of Japanese ability, equivalent to N2; the second highest qualification as per the standardized Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Her master’s thesis examined Japanese–English translated online guidelines provided by the Immigration Bureau of Japan, comparing instruction clarity, and analyzed the most problematic recurring sentences before, during, and after introduction of new residence cards for non-Japanese. Laura has also researched machine translation’s abilities to apply computer-assisted tools, and the consequences of this advancement on human-created translation. Her interests lie in intercultural and intracultural communication both offline and online, and most recently in social media, particularly in Japan and other parts of Asia.
