Qualifications

2011 – MBA, University of California at Davis
2002 – BSc Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of California at Santa Cruz

Mr Pack worked as a medicinal chemist for six years in the pharmaceutical industry in North America. His work focused on high-throughput methods of synthesis and purification, as well as the planning and synthesis of focused small-molecule libraries. During this time, he helped develop potential drugs for diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Mr Pack is skilled in a variety of purification procedures and instrument usage, as well as chemical synthesis procedures. He also wrote numerous scientific reports on chemical procedures and the molecular biology of oncology during his time as a researcher. Leaving the lab bench, Mr Pack undertook an MBA focused on biotechnology marketing and finance. He then worked as a consultant for two biotechnology firms. His worked involved pricing IND drugs through of variety of methods, including risk adjusted net present value models, and intellectual properties pricing.

Mr Pack has authored a number of patents for chemical synthesis of oncology drugs. He has published two manuscripts in the journal Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters.

Mr Pack has edited many scientific manuscripts in a wide variety of fields, mostly focusing on natural products chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and economics. He joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2012.



Dr Andrew Jackson

Qualifications

2013 – PhD in Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience, University of Queensland
2008 – MChem (Chemistry), Oxford University

Dr Jackson is an internationally trained chemist with academic and industrial experience in materials science. At Oxford University, he studied mechanisms of C-H bond activation and organometallic catalysis, which allowed him to also do research at Kyoto University. After working in industry, developing novel methods for synthesizing reagents, he entered the doctoral program at the University of Queensland, studying at the Centre for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE). His research at COPE focused on the synthesis and characterization of nanocrystal/organic composites and optoelectronic applications of these materials. He also helped develop novel macromolecules for organic light-emitting diodes and nanocrystalline catalysts for water-splitting.

Dr Jackson has authored a paper published in Macromolecules and presented research at the International Conference on Emerging Advanced Nanomaterials 2012.

Bringing with him his expertise in chemistry and materials science, Dr Jackson joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in 2013.



Adam Goulston

Qualifications

2016 – MS Health Sciences (Public Health), Touro University Worldwide

Mr Goulston has an educational and professional background in journalism, information technology, health sciences/public health, and social sciences. He is a board-certified Editor in the Life Sciences (ELS). For over a decade he has been devoted to editing research and documentation in diverse areas including economics/business, technology, social sciences, development studies, and health sciences. Mr Goulston’s undergraduate studies focused on print journalism and emerging online journalism, and his early career featured management of online community development (the roots of social networking) with Internet startups in the United States as well as IT support in Japan. His master’s research focused on the issue of the emerging “digital divide,” IT implementation in developing countries and its impacts on discourse and social infrastructure, and Asian urban development. He later worked to assist IT implementation with NGOs and UN organizations in Thailand and Cambodia before returning to Japan.

Mr Goulston worked as an Editor for 3 years with an independent research arm of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, refining policy papers and academic critiques, followed by 5 years as an Editor/Translator for a Tokyo-based translation company and publisher engaged with numerous high-level researchers and multinational corporate clients. Proficient in Japanese with translation experience, his foreign language study gives him a deep understanding of ESL authors and their writing styles and he is highly versed in the challenges of ESL authors publishing their work for a global audience. Mr Goulston joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2014.



Dr Kate Harris

Qualifications

2010 - PhD Chemistry, University of Basel
2005 - MChem Chemistry with a Year in Europe, University of Edinburgh

Dr Harris has a broad background in chemistry, with a PhD and postdoctoral research experience in supramolecular and co-ordination chemistry. Her PhD research involved an in-depth study of the dynamic solution-state self-assembly of flexible ditopic terpyridine ligands with cobalt(II) ions. For this she used a variety of NMR techniques, including DOSY and PGSE methods, and developed skills in the measurement and interpretation of NMR spectra of paramagnetic compounds. After graduating, Dr Harris spent 2 years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tokyo, where she focused on the synthesis of self-assembled spherical complexes and their non-covalent functionalization.

She has published eight original research articles and one review article in international journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society and Chemical Communications. She is also the first author of a book chapter that comprehensively reviews coordination self-assembly, and has presented her research at numerous national and international conferences.

Dr Harris is proficient in Japanese and German, and has worked in international research groups in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. She has been editing research papers written by non-native English speaking colleagues for over 10 years, and has also worked as an editor for manuscripts accepted for publication by ChemPhysChem. During her PhD, she worked as an editorial assistant for the journal Polyhedron, selecting reviewers and liaising with authors and referees. Dr Harris joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2014.



Dr Trevor Lane - Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant

Qualifications

1995 - PhD Physiological Sciences, University of Oxford, UK

Dr Lane has a broad background in the biomedical sciences, having graduated with an MA in Biochemistry and Chemical Pharmacology and a PhD in the molecular and cellular biology of cancer from the University of Oxford. He has also held postdoctoral positions in clinical oncology and microbial genetics in Hong Kong. He has since served in a variety of editorial roles in academic, research, and publishing institutions. He has worked as managing editor of several general and specialist medical journals based in Asia and senior editor of two social science journals based in the United States. Most recently, he taught science research communication at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong. Dr Lane is a member of the World Association of Medical Editors and the Committee on Publication Ethics. He also holds a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Trinity College London and a Postgraduate Certificate in English Language Teaching from the University of Reading. He joined the Edanz Group as a Senior Editor in the Fukuoka office in 2015.



Dr Ruth Tunn

Qualifications

Dr Tunn has an academic background in the biomedical sciences and is experienced in a wide range of molecular biology techniques, including protein expression and analysis, stem cell culture, and quantitative reverse transcription PCR. After gaining a BA in Physiological Sciences, she joined the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of fat cells and tissues. Specifically, she investigated intracellular calcium signaling and the expression of a family of cation channels (two-pore channels) in mammalian cells; the role of these channels in the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into fat cells (adipogenesis); and body composition in transgenic mice using time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance. During her PhD, Dr Tunn worked as a graduate teaching assistant and tutor for the preclinical medical degree program at the University of Oxford. After graduating, she obtained a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from Edge Hill University, specializing in mathematics.

Dr Tunn co-authored several papers on topics related to her PhD research, which were published in international journals, including the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Endocrinology, and Molecular and Cellular Biology.

During her time as a PhD student, Dr Tunn edited manuscripts for non-native English-speaking colleagues, and supported ESL students in their preparation of reports and dissertations. She joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2015.

Scott Wysong

Qualifications

2015 - BELS Certification
​1994 - BA Copywriting, Advertising Arts College, San Diego, USA

After two years in the liberal arts program at the University of Texas El Paso, Mr Wysong attended the Advertising Arts College in San Diego where he studied advertising and graphic design with an emphasis on copywriting. After a year of freelance graphic design work, he moved to Fukuoka, Japan where he taught English to students of all ages for 5 years, as well as helping to develop teaching materials and editing newsletters for Little America. During this period he also studied and became fluent in Japanese, earning JLPT level 2 certification. He then worked as a Japanese-English translator for 8 years.

Mr Wysong joined  Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2008. He earned certification as an editor in the life sciences from BELS in 2015. Mr Wysong’s 8 years of experience in translation and further 8 years in editing with Edanz give him a unique understanding of ESL authors and an ability to help them convey their research accurately. His experience in advertising and as a contracted translator for numerous major corporate clients, including Carnival Cruise Lines, American Airlines, and Coach, make him familiar with all stages of the commercial publication process. He is well versed in the writing and composition of academic manuscripts, and in helping clients’ make their work ready for the peer review process.



Ayli Chong

Qualifications

2005 – BHlthSci Hearing and Speech, The University of Sydney

Ms Chong’s studies focused on the biological and linguistic mechanisms underlying hearing and speech processes, as well as voice and swallowing disorders. During and after her studies, she worked in various clinical, community, and educational settings helping both children and adults to maximize their communication abilities so that they can function to their full potential in society. While working at The University of Sydney in 2009, she developed a keen interest in editing. A lifelong desire to visit Japan saw her seize the opportunity to teach English on a remote island in Okinawa for 2 years from 2010.

Ms Chong further pursued her interest in editing by becoming Editor of the Okinawa Prefecture community magazine for English teachers and volunteer proofreader for Miyakojima City. Currently she applies both her knowledge and experience to editing research related to her specialized field including: people whose native language is not English, individuals with autism spectrum disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, attention deficit disorders, Down syndrome, hearing and swallowing difficulties, delayed development, brain injury, stroke, dementia, facial abnormalities, and neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. She joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2013.



Alan Purvis

Qualifications

2004 – BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering, The University of Manchester

Mr Purvis studied aerospace engineering at The University of Manchester, a course that covered diverse topics including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, and image processing. Keen to broaden his horizons, he moved to Japan in 2005 and started teaching at an English language school, and at engineering companies in and around Tokyo. For 9 years he taught students of all ages and from all walks of life, building an in-depth knowledge of English.

Mr Purvis has applied his engineering background to his experience working with non-native speakers. He has edited manuscripts in mining, manufacturing, transport, computer and network hardware, and various other engineering-related fields. He has also presented courses in Japanese universities aimed at assisting researchers to achieve their publication goals. He joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2014.



Abeer Fadl

Qualifications

2012 – MPP, Public Policy, University of Michigan
2012 – MA, Political Science, University of Windsor
2009 – BA, Honors Specialization International Relations, University of Western Ontario

Ms Fadl has a varied academic and professional background. Between 2010 and 2012, she concurrently completed an MA in political science and a Master of Public Policy degree. These programs entailed a significant research and writing component, including a final thesis focusing on South Sudan’s independence and governance in post-colonial settings, which deepened her working understanding on the standards and ethics of academic publishing. Before moving to Fukuoka, Japan, Ms Fadl served as a policy research assistant at the Embassy of Canada to the United States, where she drafted communications materials on cross-border defense and procurement developments. Her areas of expertise include public policy and governance, comparative politics, cost-benefit analysis, languages, and international relations.

During her postgraduate studies, Ms Fadl worked as a research and teaching assistant. In addition to correcting undergraduate papers, she edited a textbook manuscript for publishing, ensuring that the material was clearly written at a level appropriate for first-year students. In her current role, she edits manuscripts on topics in the humanities and social sciences, including policy and international relations. Having studied several languages over her academic and professional career, Ms Fadl has experienced firsthand the challenges of expressing complex ideas in a non-native language. She enjoys helping authors overcome such challenges to achieve their publishing goals. Ms Fadl joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2015.



Chris Norman

Qualifications

2005 - BA Japanese Studies, The University of Sheffield, UK

Mr Norman earned a BA in Japanese Studies from the University of Sheffield. As part of his studies, he spent a year at the School of Political Science and Economics at Meiji University, Japan. After graduating in 2005, he moved to Japan and worked for 5 years as an English teacher and Japanese–English translator and interpreter. His translation work encompassed a wide range of fields, including advertising and psychotherapy.

Mr Norman’s work as a translator gave him experience with helping non-native authors to effectively convey their ideas in English. This interest in the difficulties encountered by non-native authors led to him joining Edanz in 2010, where he worked for 5 years copy editing manuscripts in all fields as a member of the in-house editorial team. He has since moved to the medical communications business unit, where he works as a specialist copy editor of the manuscripts developed by our medical writing team.



Luke Kenyon

Qualifications

2002 - BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing, University of Bolton, UK

Luke graduated with a BA (Hons) in English and Creative Writing from the University of Bolton in 2002. He moved to Japan in 2004, and spent 9 years teaching a wide range of focused English curricula to non-native speakers, awakening an interest in copy editing and the STM industry. Luke joined Edanz in December 2013, where he applies his knowledge of the writing process, his love of language and his attention to detail as a valued member of the Quality Control Editing Team.



Julia Schumann-Mudrick

Qualifications

2013 – MSc, Ethnobotany, University of Kent
2008 – BA, University of Virginia

Ms Schumann has a varied academic and professional background including research in field botany and anthropology. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she was employed at the United States Forest Service, assisting with field and laboratory studies on plant genetic adaptation and native plant materials. After this, she worked with a local NGO in rural Kenya conducting research on intercropping traditional leafy vegetables. In 2013, she moved to Mie Prefecture, Japan to carry out fieldwork for her master’s thesis on non-timber forest plants used by volunteer forestry workers. In 2013, Ms Schumann graduated from the University of Kent’s School of Anthropology and Conservation with an MSc with distinction and spent the following 2 and a half years lecturing on presentation and proposal writing skills at Mie University.

Ms Schumann is a member of the American Copy Editors Society and has over 6 years’ experience editing academic manuscripts, including book chapters and theses. She currently applies her skills to editing works on forest management, agriculture, ecological applications, and related fields. She has first-hand experience conducting and writing about her research in a second language (Japanese) and understands the challenges that ESL authors face. She enjoys helping authors break down language barriers and successfully publish their work in international forums. Ms Schumann joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2015.



Lilly Gray

Qualifications

2012 – BA, Communication Studies (1st Hons), Hollins University

Ms Gray focused on cultural criticism and media studies as a Communication Studies major at Hollins University. Her senior honors thesis involved research at the National Museum of American History and the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, to examine representations of past and present American military conflict in museum exhibits. Her presentation experience includes both conference and university instruction settings. Ms Gray has taught writing techniques to students ranging from elementary to high school, and spent 3 years teaching English to the global course of a Japanese academic high school in Toyama Prefecture.

Ms Gray assessed submissions for two undergraduate literary journals and has assisted non-native English speakers in preparing presentations and manuscripts for an international audience. She joined Edanz Group’s in-house editorial team in the Fukuoka office in 2015.

Yes, when we edit the manuscript, we will check basic journal guidelines and make sure your manuscript is correct.

We will:

  • Check and change spelling/language (use the spelling style specified in the journal guidelines or if there are no requirements use whatever is dominant in the manuscript)
  • We will thoroughly check that your manuscript meets the word limits defined in the instructions for authors.
    • If your manuscript is far over the limit, then we’ll let you know with a comment in the manuscript
    • If you need a large word count reduction, get in touch for a custom quote
  • Check target journal guidelines and leave a guiding comment on the following:
    • Word limits for abstract/manuscript
    • Abstract structure
    • Title page (e.g. missing information)
    • Missing sections (highlights, abstract, introduction, conflict of interest statement, etc.)

 

There are some things we won't do:

  • Make actual formatting changes or leave placeholders for missing information
  • Edit in-text citations or the reference list (if you want these checked and edited, you will need to order "Reference editing" service)
  • Edit text inside tables/figures (if you want these checked and edited, you will need to order "Table & figure editing" services)

Yes, we can edit references, but only if you ask us to; it is not part of our normal editing service.

References will be edited for typos and for compliance with the correct format. However, we will not research and insert missing information.

Reference management software can make this an easy job for the author. However, Edanz does not edit citations or references generated by reference management software such as EndNote or Mendeley;  any changes would be overwritten if the citations or references are regenerated later.

Reference editing includes:

  • Correcting spelling and punctuation as per target journal instructions
  • Adjusting typography (e.g., bold, italics) as per target journal instructions
  • Correcting spacing, replacing Asian characters, correcting journal title style
  • Reducing the number of listed author names in references as per journal requirements
  • Correcting the in-text citation style as per target journal instructions

Reference editing does not include:

  • Researching or inserting missing information (e.g., author names)
  • LaTeX files— sorry, we cannot provide our reference editing services for files with LaTeX coding

 

 

 

Clarification Editing

This is an extra round of editing after the first edit and before submission to a journal. Price: FREE!

We recommend ordering this service in the following situations:

  • You received questions or a request for additional information from our editor via comments in the manuscript.
  • You made changes to the text based on comments that the editor left in the manuscript.
  • You are unsure about whether a change made in the first round reflects your intended meaning and you would like to ask a question/seek confirmation.  
Please send us the following:
  • The revised version of your manuscript. The file should contain tracked changes that you have made after you received your edited manuscript from us.

 

Review Editing

If you have revised your manuscript after submitting to a journal or after peer review, we can perform a Review Edit to make sure any new text you have added is submission-ready and consistent with the rest of your manuscript. Price: 50% of our regular editing fees!

If you are instructed by the editor of your target journal or peer reviewers to make further revisions, you can send the revised manuscript to us for a Review Edit.

Please send us the following:
  • The revised version of your manuscript. The file should contain tracked changes that you have made after you received your edited manuscript from us.
  • Any communication you have received from the journal such as an email from the journal editor or comments from peer reviewers.

We will thoroughly check the journal's submission guidelines and make necessary changes.

We will:

  • Check journal guidelines and make formatting changes (not language editing) for the following so that the manuscript format suits submission requirements (formatting tables/figures are not included in this service):
    • Title page
    • Abstract
    • Keywords
    • Main text
    • References

Formatting won't include:

  • Increasing / decreasing word count if abstract / manuscript is under / over the word limit

We will:

  • Check and change spelling/language of the text within the tables/figures

  • Check that the style and formatting (of tables/figures) conform with the target journal's instructions for authors, or are consistent if there is no target journal -  we will let you know if they are incorrect

We won't:

  • Reformat tables or figures if they have been incorrectly formatted

If the figures would be useful as a guide for our editor, please send us your figures. If they are large, send us a low resolution version (we can only receive files up to 5MB). We can receive PDF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF files. Upload these files in the section for supporting documents.

As an associate member of COPE, Edanz supports the current industry standards in publication and research ethics. We practice this commitment through transparent and ethical services, as well as offering guidance to authors should an ethical issue arise with their manuscript.

English language editing by Edanz’s expert editors  will improve the chances of your manuscript being accepted for publication. However, we cannot “edit” the research content of your manuscript: this is something for peer reviewers to comment on.

Therefore, while we cannot make any guarantees regarding the publication of your research, we can guarantee that we will get your manuscript into the best possible condition for submission to a journal for peer review.

Good ethical awareness and practice is essential for everyone involved in academic research, manuscript production and publishing. The ethical standards set out by groups such as ICMJE, COPE, and EASE are the standards against which journals and your fellow researchers will hold your work. As an associate member of COPE, Edanz supports the current industry standards in publication and research ethics. We practice this commitment through transparent and ethical services, as well as offering guidance to authors should an ethical issue arise with their manuscript.

Use of our services is neither a requirement for, nor a guarantee of, acceptance for publication in any journal.

What we do:

  • Participate in COPE activities as an associate member
  • Work with EASE to translate author guidelines into Japanese and Chinese
  • Conduct regular author workshops - of which publication ethics are a part
  • Maintain regular contact with our publisher partners about the latest issues and guidelines regarding publishing ethics
  • Advise authors on the appropriate course of action when an ethical issue arises with their manuscript
  • Advise on authorship and conflict of interest issues
  • Edit clinical manuscripts within the guidelines set out by CONSORT and/or STROBE, as appropriate
  • Ensure authors make all decisions regarding the content of their manuscripts

We will not:

  • Edit or rewrite plagiarised text
  • Knowingly facilitate any malpractice, including:
    • Inappropriate authorship
    • Undisclosed conflicts of interest
    • Duplicate publication
    • Concurrent submission to multiple journals
    • Data fabrication or manipulation

Plagiarism

Our policies on plagiarism

Plagiarism is a major ethical offense in publishing and Edanz strives to ensure that all of our dealings with authors are ethically responsible and also to encourage and educate authors to be ethically responsible. Knowingly modifying plagiarized text still counts as plagiarism; therefore, Edanz has set out strict policies on any plagiarism found in a manuscript submitted to us.

  • If plagiarized text is found during editing, the text will be highlighted and left unedited. Authors will be advised about the issue and guidance offered if needed on how to resolve the situation.
  • Any text that has been directly copied and pasted from another source and submitted to us for rewriting/editing will be returned to the author without revision so that the author can replace it with original text prior to editing.
  • Articles or portions of articles that have previously been published cannot be rewritten or used without attribution. These will be returned to the author with guidance on proper publication and citation practice.

Please note, although we will identify any text to the author that has been found to be plagiarized, we do not screen for plagiarism. The final content of all manuscripts handled by Edanz is always the responsibility of the author.
