Tell a story about your research

Your manuscript will tell other researchers a story about what you did, why, your findings and why they are interesting. Writing clearly can be a challenge, even for authors whose first language is English. The Edanz mission is to remove language as a barrier to acceptance of your manuscript. Before you begin writing, we encourage you to download our Guide to Publication Success and to read our advice on Writing in English for non-native authors. Once you've finished writing your manuscript then you may wish to have one of our native-English experts in your field revise your English so that it is clear, concise and reaches a level suitable for submission to peer review at an international journal.

Edanz Publication Resources

  • Introduction

  • Writing in English for non-native authors
With increased pressure on publication space many journals immediately reject papers that are poorly written, without sending them for peer review. By being aware of some of the most common language errors found in scientific writing, and understanding how to avoid them, you can improve the quality of your paper and increase its chances of being accepted.
  • Abstracts and key words
Most people will only read your abstract. We show you how to encapsulate your research and the importance of your findings into a concise summary.
  • Publication ethics
Unethical behavior can lead to rejection or even a ban from some journals. But what comprises unethical behavior and how can it be avoided?
  • The 'write' order and IMRaD
We explain what each section of your manuscript should contain and how to tell a story about what you did, why you did it, and what you found.
  • Display items
There are certain guidelines you should follow when making figures and tables in your manuscript. We walk you through the most important rules.

Make peer review work for you

Peer review is a positive process that improves your manuscript so that it can benefit the international research community. Very few manuscripts are accepted for publication without the need to make changes, so don't feel discouraged if you're asked to make revisions. Making revisions and responding to peer review comments can be challenging. Read our advice and use our Response Letter Template below to make peer review work for you.

  • Rejecting without review: the whys, the hows
The number of manuscript submissions to SCI journals vastly outweighs the amount of space journals have to publish. To ensure that appropriate manuscripts are sent for peer review, the editorial selection process has critical role to play. The editorial by ACS Nano associate editor Jillian M. Buriak describes rejecting without review and how to avoid it.
